Onondaga Community College has a history of excellence in athletics, and is proud of its more than 200 athletes who participate in one of the institution’s 15 competitive teams. In the past three years, Onondaga teams have captured five national championships, and in 2009 became the first college in NJCAA history to achieve two simultaneous national championships in Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse. According to Onondaga Nation Faithkeeper Oren Lyons, a former lacrosse goalie for Syracuse University, two-time, third-team All-American, co-captain of the Syracuse University team in 1957 and 1958, and 1992 inductee into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, these dual national championships are “unprecedented in the history of the game.”
Also in 2009, the College dedicated David W. Murphy Field, a $2.9 million facility that features a state-of-the-art turf field for lacrosse and soccer, seating for 2,000 fans, a modern press box, lighting and sound system, among other features. The field hosts games and practices nearly every night of the week as the College’s own teams take the field or when being utilized by other college and scholastic teams in the community. The opening of Murphy Field is part of significant capital investment on the part of the College, which includes the opening of SRC Arena, a $12 million facility announced in May 2009.
SRC Arena, named in recognition of a $1.525 million gift to the Onondaga Presidential Scholars Program by SRC, and features a multitude of amenities for Onondaga athletes, students, fans and the community.
Guided by an Athletics Master Plan, the College is proud of its commitment to growing top-quality student-athletes, in addition to a growing number of competitive teams and a thriving intramurals program focused on the health and well-being of all Onondaga students.
