Official Rules

Official NIRSA Intramural Volleyball Rules will be used, with the following modifications:

  • Matches are best 2 of 3, rally scoring, games 1 & 2 to 15 points, game 3 to 10 points
  • All games will use a win-by-two format. The first two games will cap at 20 and the third game (if necessary) will cap at 15.
  • Playoffs will consist of the top 6 teams with the best record.
  • Playoff seeding tiebreakers:
    • Head to head game won/loss record
    • Head to Head match
    • Composite score among tied teams (total points accumulated throughout season)
  • All participants must show a current valid OCC ID when signing in with game officials.
  • Roster changes/ Permanent Subs:
  • Roster additions/substitutions are allowed through November 18, up to the maximum roster size of 10 players. No changes to the roster after 11/18.
  • Teams will consist of 8 regular players and 2 permanent subs. Permanent subs must be submitted to the Intramural Coordinator by November 18th.
  • Team Captains must e-mail intramural coordinator when permanent subs are being used.
  • Permanent Subs can only be used when one or two of the potentially 8 players on your teams roster cannot play. Advanced notice by e-mail to the Intramural Coordinator is required.
  • Forfeits:
  • Teams must have at least 6 players present to play. Less than 6 players will result in a Forfeit. Teams with 2 or more forfeits will not receive their deposits back.
  • Player Conduct:
  • Any players displaying unacceptable behavior will be disqualified from further participation.
  • The decisions of court monitors and the Intramural Coordinator are final.
Play:
  • Six players per team are allowed on the court at a time. A minimum of four players is necessary to begin and continue play. Teams with less than 6 players present will receive an automatic forfeit, but can still play the scheduled game with the players they have so as not to take away from the opposing team’s expectation to play.
  • Each team is allowed a maximum of three successive contacts of the ball in order to return the ball to the opponent’s area. Blocks do not count as a contact.
  • Rally Scoring means a point will be scored on every serve regardless of which side is serving. After every point, the team that scored will serve next.
Rotation:
  • Players for each team will rotate before their serve after scoring a point when the other team is serving.
Serving:
  • Blocking or attacking a serve is illegal.
  • Serves that hit the net are in play.
  • The server must stand entirely behind the end line until he or she strikes the ball.
  • Servers must rotate through the entire lineup before any one player can serve again. No player can serve twice before any of their teammates have served once.
  • All passes must be clearly contacted, not thrown or lifted.
Substitutions:
  • Substitutions may only occur during dead balls.
  • Teams may elect to rotate all players in one at a time through the server’s position or may substitute player for player.
  • The team must indicate which method will be used at the start of each set.
Lines:
  • Any ball landing on the line is good.
  • The server must stand entirely behind the end line until he or she strikes the ball.
  • A player’s foot/hand may land on the center line provided it is not entirely over the line.
Net Play:
  • Players may reach over the net and block the ball, provided the opposing team has completed their attempt to return the ball over the net.
  • The ball is considered to have crossed the net when any part of the ball is extended over the net.
  • Teams must rotate clockwise after receiving a side-out.
