Dr. Daryll Dykes' Ph.D., MD, JD fell in love with the power of medicine at an early age. When he was a young boy growing up on Syracuse’s west side, he enjoyed visiting his mother while she worked as a nurse. After graduating from Fowler High School in 1980, Dykes joined the United States Marine Corps as a way of paying for college. When he completed his military obligation Dykes came to OCC and majored in Mathematics & Science, completing his degree in 1983. “The classes and professors really ignited my passion for learning. The professors saw my talent, invested in it and pushed me to do great things,” Dykes said.
He turned his passion for medicine into a career. Today Dykes is one of the leaders at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. He's the Associate Vice President of Orthopedic Surgery, a Professor of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and Chief Diversity Officer.
As he has climbed the professional ladder of success, Dykes has maintained close ties to OCC. "We're grateful he has regularly spoken with current students and shared his message of hard work, perseverance, and determination. He's had a positive impact on those who sit in the classrooms where he once sat," said OCC President Dr. Warren Hilton.
In recent years Dykes has been recognized numerous times for his contribution to the college and the community. OCC named him a distinguished Alumni Face honoree. In 2018 he received the Outstanding Alumni Award from the American Association of Community Colleges. And in 2022 he was recognized by the New York Community College Trustees, receiving the award for Professional Contribution. “For me, it all started at OCC with those initial connections with faculty. Their nurturing attitude encouraged me to seek out other mentors at various stages of my life who would have a huge impact on my career. Now that I am on the other side of that, there is nothing more gratifying than giving someone a chance and to watch them achieve their dream and flourish.”
