When Mirianny Tifa Paulino was growing up in the Dominican Republic, the goal was to live in America one day. "My mother always saw the United States in our future. When I was a little she put me in an English institute so I would learn English."
Paulino started taking classes at Onondaga Community College in the spring 2024 semester and quickly found an academic program that aligned with her passion. "When I was in the Dominican Republic being a singer was my job. I worked in piano bars. When I saw there was a Music major here I thought 'this is my way.'"
Like so many English as Second Language students, Paulino has found learning coursework takes twice as long. "Spanish is my native language, so I am working to learn things in English. And Music is another language I am learning as well."
Her Voice professor is Julia Ebner. Paulino has seen a big improvement in her ability while learning from her. "She's amazing and has taught me a lot. When I started, my vocal range was out of tune. Now I can do much more with her help."
She's been able to share her vocal talents locally, performing in the Latino Village at the New York State Fair, the Puerto Rican Festival, and the North Side Festival. "The experiences were amazing. They were another level."
Paulino will complete her degree in 2026, and plans to become a U.S. Citizen later this decade. She credits her mother with being the driving force in her life. "Her support is so important to me. She raised four girls and we are all good people because of her. She always is there to support me in everything."
