Onondaga Community College students who spent their summer doing paid internships at Micron Technology shared their experiences with the campus community during a panel discussion September 4 in the Gordon Student Center Great Room. The conversation was moderated by Professor Mike Grieb who is one of the instructors in the Micron-related Electromechanical Technology degree program. "Everybody is going to be successful who comes out of this program. There will be a lot of opportunities locally, nationally, and globally in the long term."
Eleven students were selected for paid summer internships at Micron Technology. Eight chose to do their internship in Boise, Idaho, and the other three selected Micron's site in Manassas, Virginia. Five of those students participated in the panel discussion, and all said they were offered jobs with Micron.
OCC welcomed students into the new Electromechanical Technology degree program one year ago. As students prepare for rewarding careers in the semiconductor industry, the college is building the Micron Cleanroom Simulation Lab in the Whitney Applied Technology Center. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2025. Also under construction in the same space are training centers for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Machining, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), and Welding.
The panel discussion was covered by local television news stations CNY Central, WSYR TV, and Spectrum News. You can view their coverage by clicking on those links.
