I. Policy Statement
Onondaga Community College requires that all employees and contractors follow procedures to obtain a Hot Work Permit before performing any welding, brazing, soldering, torch cutting, chipping, grinding, and any other task that generates sparks or heat.
II. Reason for Policy
The College is committed to providing a safe working and learning environment for its employees and students. Potential health, safety and property hazards can result from the fumes, gases, sparks, hot metal and radiant energy produced during hot work. These and other hazards can be reduced through the implementation and maintenance of proper permitting procedures and other controls. Moreover, federal standards promulgated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) apply to hot work, and the College is required to comply with these standards.
III. Applicability of the Policy
This policy applies to all employees and contractors who perform hot work, which includes, but is not limited to, welding, brazing, soldering, torch cutting, chipping, grinding, and any other task that generates sparks or heat.

VI. Procedures
Authorized Personnel. Only trained and qualified personnel who are familiar with required safety practices are authorized to perform hot work operations. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that employees are properly trained and qualified before performing hot work.
Hot Work Permit Procedure. A permit shall be obtained before performing any hot work. Permits are issued by authorized College officials. Once the permit is issued, work can begin. A copy of the issued permit should be forwarded to Campus Safety and Security. Upon completion of the work, copies of completed permits should be forwarded to the person who issued the permit and Campus Safety and Security.
Personal Protective Equipment. All people participating in hot work must wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
Hot Work Procedures and Precautions. All hot work must be conducted according to the rules and regulations outlined in OSHA Standard 29 CFR Part 1910 Subpart Q and Chapter 26 of the New York State Fire Code.
