Testing for non-native English speakers
English proficiency is required by all ESL students and is critical to your college success. We're here to help. If English is not your first language, we encourage you to complete the LOEP (Levels of English Proficiency) test. Here are some things to know:
- The test takes approximately two hours to complete and covers reading, listening, and writing skills, along with some math tests.
- You'll be allowed to use the on-screen calculator for the math portion, but won't be allowed to use any other calculators, including the one on your phone.
- For the writing sample, you'll be provided with a topic and asked to type an essay (approximately 300 words) on the computer. The writing sample is timed, and you will have a maximum of 60 minutes to complete your essay. You must complete the essay in order to receive your results.
- Dictionaries or translators of any kind are not allowed.
- Be sure to look at some sample questions before taking the test to help make sure you're prepared.
