When Micron announced it was coming to Central New York and gifting Onondaga Community College $5 million for construction of a space where students could be trained for rewarding careers in the semiconductor industry, the Onondaga County Legislature immediately matched the gift, followed shortly thereafter by New York State.
On April 15, the Onondaga County Legislature's Facilities Committee held its monthly meeting on the OCC campus. After completing the items on their agenda, committee members toured construction in the Whitney Applied Technology Center. They rode the brand new freight elevator up to the second floor where they saw the Micron Cleanroom Simulation Lab and the space where HVAC will be taught. On the first floor they saw the future welding training center, the machine tools lab, and the space where CNC Machining will be taught. County Legislators also saw the current Automotive Technology lab and, on the other side of it, the construction of the new home for the Diesel/Heavy Equipment program.
The tour was led by Steve Suarez of OCC's Facilities team. All of the construction in the Whitney building is on schedule to be completed in time for the fall 2025 semester. You can see photos from the tour below.
