Each Wednesday we are sharing the stories of outstanding students who began their college education while still in high school. Today we introduce you to Alyssa Millet.
Alyssa Millet's passion for science has put her on a breathtaking academic path. She's a senior at East Syracuse Minoa (ESM) High School who is also taking classes at Onondaga Community College tuition-free as part of the Spartan Academy program. She's about to receive both her high school diploma and associate degree in Mathematics & Science. "It's crazy! I'm proud of myself. It wasn't easy, but I did it."
Millet spent the summer of 2024 taking classes at OCC. Throughout the 2024-25 academic year, she took classes at OCC every morning before spending afternoons at ESM.
On the advice of OCC Biology Professor Elisabeth Hamilton, she applied to be a part of a research grant at SUNY Binghamton. Millet was accepted and will spend this summer there doing research. In the fall, she will attend Binghamton while majoring in Biology. She was expecting to work toward her bachelor’s degree tuition-free, but the federal funding which was promised and supported the program was recently eliminated. She still plans to attend Binghamton in the fall despite the broken promise of federal funding.
