The OCC Foundation is Lazer-focused on supporting students. That's why on Monday, April 15 the College will begin a "Week of Giving" fundraiser. Because 85% of OCC graduates live and work within 25 miles of the campus, when you support students you are also ensuring a vibrant future for our community.
OCC students come from a wide variety of backgrounds with a shared goal of improving their lives through higher education. Our unique student population includes:
- RJ Tinsley is a Liverpool High School graduate who earned two college degrees and was working a variety of different jobs when he heard the news about Micron coming to the region. He enrolled in the new Micron-related Electromechanical Technology degree program and is having an outstanding first year. This summer he will do a paid internship at Micron in Boise, Idaho.
- Abi Marin is a native of Cuba and a graduate of Cicero-North Syracuse High School who was working in a bilingual Communication Center for the Deaf when her colleagues noticed the high quality of drawings she was creating in between calls. Thanks to their encouragement, she came to OCC. Abi will complete her Graphic Design degree this semester and continue her education at SUNY Oswego.
- Isaac Bennett graduated from Jamesville-Dewitt High School in 2022 and came to OCC after he didn't receive large enough scholarship offers from four-year schools. He took advantage of opportunities on campus and became a tutor to fellow students, a member of the Cross Country team, part of the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars program, started the Math Club, and was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He'll graduate next month and pursue a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Irene Douglas is a 36-year-old mother of 5 who is the primary caregiver for her husband, a U.S. Army Veteran who suffered a traumatic brain injury. She's a native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo who juggles the demands of her life while also working as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She will complete her degree in May and continue her education at SUNY Brockport. Her goal is a career in either neuroscience or cognitive science.
